"Your face is marked with lines of life, put there by love and laughter, suffering and tears. It's beautiful." - Lynsay Sands

Here at One Fine secret, we prefer the term 'experienced skin' over 'aged skin'. The beauty industry is plagued with 'anti-aging' messaging, but aging is such a natural part of life! It is a beautiful gift to live a long life, and one we should embrace!

But we also understand – your skin may feel a little different than before. So, lets break it down, on a cellular level 😊

Our tiny skin cells grow, reproduce and die every 28 days moving up from the basal layer to the epidermal (surface) layer of our skin. The frequency at which our skin cells regenerate starts to decline from around the age of 25 and this process is referred to as intrinsic aging.

When the number of new cells decrease, our skin can become thinner, dryer and looser. This is most noticeable in women during menopause where estrogen production slows, reducing the oil content, fatty tissue as well as collagen and elastin fibers in the skin – hello wrinkles!

External factors can also cause damage to our cells, accelerating the appearance of aging. This is referred to as extrinsic aging. Think – sun damage, pollution, poor diet, drugs and alcohol. The Result? Sad cells ☹

It's natural for us all to notice the following changes to our skin over time:

  • Reduced elasticity
  • Emergence of pigmentation and sunspots from sun damage
  • Increased fine lines and wrinkles from fewer collagen and elastin fibers being produced
  • Thinning skin with dry, dull tone from reduced oil production and fat loss

Our top skincare recommendations for youthful skin!

Care for your experienced skin by aiming to optimise skin health at a cellular level through a combination of topical products, a healthy diet rich in omegas and limiting exposure to environmental aggressors like the sun.

Your skincare ritual should contain actives that stimulate collagen and elastin, and be packed with antioxidants to protect against free radicals.

Vitamin A to increase the speed of cell turn over, as well as reduce the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots.

Vitamin C for enhanced collagen synthesis and antioxidant protection against environmental aggressors.

Hyaluronic Acid to replace trans epidermal water loss and leave the skin feeling plump and smooth.

Nourishing face oil to combat dryness and lock in moisture

Hydrating & reparative moisturiser to retain skin moisture

Peptides for improving tone and skin elasticity.

Another top tip is to exfoliate weekly. When our skin cell turn over slows down, the number of dry, dead skin cells can accumulate on the surface layer of our skin. Exfoliate to remove these and prevent congestion.

"I can’t be bothered with all that, just tell me one thing"

Sunscreen. Sunscreen. Sunscreen! Protect your skin from external aggressors and any further damage with a natural zinc mineral sunscreen. Kill two birds with one stone by using a moisturiser with built in natural SPF. We love: Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream SPF 30

Embrace the ritual of self-care

While our skin will slow down the natural production of collagen and elastin, you can take internal supplements or as we like to call them "Ingestible Beauty" to replenish your body's stores. Just add a teaspoon into some water or your morning smoothie!

Or, to support your skin and relax the mind, we recommend starting a clean beauty ritual.

Lather yourself up in your favorite oil and start a self-massage with a Gua Sha to bring blood to the area and remove stagnant fluid. Or, if actives are your go-to, add in a dermal roller to stimulate collagen production and increase the absorption of active serums.
