How to Layer Skincare: Your Complete Guide to Clean Beauty

Skincare layering can sound far more complicated than it really is. When your bathroom shelf is stacked with serums, toners, oils, moisturisers and actives, figuring out what goes where can feel like a lot to navigate. The good news? We're here to help.

Whether you're a skincare minimalist or committed to a 10-step routine, understanding a few key principles and knowing when and how to apply each product can help you get the most from the formulas you already use. Consider this your uncomplicated guide to layering clean beauty, with love from us at OFS!

Mara Beauty Sea Vitamin C Serum

The key to layering

The first place to start when figuring out your skincare order is with this simple rule of thumb: layer from your lightest formulas to your richest products.

Water-based serums often contain humectants — ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol that attract and hold onto water in the outer layer of the skin. Applying these lightweight formulas earlier in your routine allows you to build hydration before moving on to richer layers.

Creams, oils and balms contain more emollient and occlusive ingredients. Emollients help soften and smooth the skin, while occlusives create a protective layer that helps reduce water loss.

In simple terms: humectants help hydrate, emollients soften, and occlusives help seal it all in.

Your AM Routine

Mornings are all about prepping, protecting, and setting up your skin for success.

  1. Cleanse — A gentle morning cleanse helps remove any excess oil, sweat or remnants of last night's skincare without leaving your skin feeling stripped. At OFS, we've been loving the MV Skintherapy Gentle Cream Cleanser and the Oio Lab O-Mega Milk Cleansing Facial Milk & Moisture Mask.
  2. Mist/essence/toner — Toners, mists and essences help replenish hydration and prep the skin for the products that follow. We love the Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator and the Furtuna Skin Acqua Serena Micellar Essence. Press or gently pat into the skin and move on once it's settled.
  3. Serums — Antioxidants like vitamin C are particularly at home in a morning routine, helping support the skin against everyday environmental stressors. Try Mukti's Vitamin Booster Vital C Elixir or the Mara Beauty Sea Vitamin C Serum. Other hydrating, brightening or soothing serums like Ursa Major's Forest Water Hyaluronic Serum and Wildcrafted Organics' Bakuchiol Cell Regenerating Serum can be layered here depending on your skin's needs.
  4. Eye treatments — If puffiness, dryness, fine lines or dark circles are a concern, a targeted eye cream is worth adding here. We love both Agent Nateur's Holi (Glow) Ageless Eye Serum and Mukti's Bioactive Renewal Eye Creme.
  5. Moisturiser — Time to lock in all that goodness. Choose a barely-there lotion like Ursa Major's Fortifying Gel Moisturiser and Agent Nateur's Holi (Water) Crème, or something richer like Ursa Major's Golden Hour Recovery Cream and Evolve Organic Beauty's Age Defying Multi Peptide Cream, based on your skin type and the season.
  6. Facial oils and balms — Because oils and balms are more occlusive, applying them towards the end of your routine helps seal the lighter layers underneath. We adore the Furtuna Skin Due Alberi Biphase Moisturizing Oil and Josh Rosebrook Vital Balm Cream. Optional — you may prefer to save your facial oil for the evening.
  7. SPF — The non-negotiable, and always the last step of your morning skincare routine, right before makeup. Follow the directions on your sunscreen for application and reapplication.

Your PM Routine

At night, our focus turns to cleansing away the day, treating your skin, and replenishing it before bed.

  1. First cleanse — An oil or balm cleanser is ideal for breaking down makeup, sunscreen and the day's buildup of sebum. Try the Mara Beauty Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil and Furtuna Skin Cielo Puro Cleansing Oil Balm. Massage onto dry skin, add a little water to emulsify, then rinse or remove with a warm cloth.
  2. Second cleanse — Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue. We love Fitglow Beauty's Gentle Ceramide Gel Cleanser and Agent Nateur's Acid (Wash) Lactic Acid Brightening Cleanser. If you haven't worn makeup or SPF, one thorough cleanse may be plenty.
  3. Mist/toner/essence — A toner, mist or essence here adds an early hit of hydration and barrier support. Try the MV Skintherapy Rose Hydrating Mist, Mara Beauty Pearl Peptide Glaze Facial Essence or Agent Nateur Holi (Water) Hyaluronic Pearl & Rose Essence.
  1. Treatment serums — Evening is where your more targeted serums address specific concerns like breakouts, pigmentation, texture and signs of ageing. If you want your actives to take centre stage, apply it to clean, dry skin before your hydrating layers. Treatment serums can be potent and potentially sensitising, so introduce them slowly. Retinoids — Touted for addressing visible signs of ageing, fine lines and uneven texture. Try Mara Beauty's Algae Retinol Face Oil and Oio Lab's Lunula Night Facial Oil. If retinoids aren't right for your skin, bakuchiol and other bio-retinols are gentler plant-derived alternatives — try the Mukti Bioactive Renewal Night Serum and Evolve Organic Beauty Bio-Retinol + C Booster. Introduce gradually and follow individual formula directions. AHAs — Work at the skin's surface to gently loosen and lift away dead skin cells, ideal for dullness, rough texture or uneven tone. Glycolic and lactic acid are common examples, found in Wildcrafted Organics' Wild Lime Fruit Acid Peel and Fitglow Beauty's Plant Active Peel Pads. BHAs — Oil-soluble, so they work within the pore to clear excess oil and buildup. Salicylic acid is the most common, making it popular for oily, congested and blemish-prone skin. Our top pick is Evolve Organic Beauty's Salicylic Rescue Serum. PHAs — Polyhydroxy acids are the gentlest of the acid family, working similarly to AHAs but with a larger molecular size that means slower skin penetration. This makes them a good starting point for sensitive skin or anyone newer to actives, gently smoothing texture without as much risk of irritation. We love Mara Beauty's Flower Acid Algae Serum

with its effective blend of AHAs and PHAs. Hydrating/supporting serums — Reach for any hydrating, soothing or replenishing serums, working from lightest texture to richest. Eye treatments — Gently tap your chosen formula around the eye area. Evening is a great opportunity for richer, more targeted formulas. We absolutely adore Josh Rosebrook's Eye Area Complex. These can also be applied before serums.

  2. Moisturiser — Helps replenish hydration and support the skin barrier overnight. Your evening moisturiser can be the same as your daytime one, or something richer like the Mukti Queen of The Night Crème and Mara Beauty SeaDream Algae Crème.
  3. Facial oils and balms — Finish with a facial oil or balm like Fitglow Beauty's Cloud Ceramide + HA Recovery Balm and Furtuna Skin's Rinascita Delle Olive Replenishing Balm to seal in the layers underneath.

Where do masks fit in?

Sheet masks — Your hydration intermission, soaked in hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients like the Vanessa Megan Gold & Lime Caviar Coconut Membrane Sheet Mask and Gracious Minds Hydration Infusion Sheet Mask. Apply before or after your toner or essence, morning or evening, as often as you like.

Hydrating and cream masks — For dry or tight skin, leave-on formulas like Josh Rosebrook's Advanced Hydration Mask come as the last step of your nighttime routine. Can be used every day.

Clay and detoxifying masks — For congested pores, try the Mara Beauty Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque and Mukti Deep Cleanse Enzyme Mask. Kaolin and bentonite clay absorb excess oil and draw out impurities. Use after cleansing and before toner, serums and moisturiser; follow with plenty of hydration.

Exfoliating masks — For dull or rough skin, an exfoliating mask 2-3 times a week, like the Wildcrafted Organics Wild Berry Honey Cleanse | Exfoliant | Masque and Evolve Organic Beauty Radiant Glow 2-in-1 Mask Scrub, helps lift away dead skin cells. Use straight after cleansing, before your hydrating layers.

Ingredients to think twice about layering

Some skincare ingredients are simply better with a little breathing room. Layering multiple potent actives together can increase the chance of damaging the skin barrier, leading to dryness, sensitivity and irritation. Sometimes alternating nights or splitting actives between AM and PM is the kinder choice.

  • Retinoids and AHAs/BHAs/PHAs — Both can be brilliant additions, but layering them together can be too much, especially for sensitive skin. Try alternating nights instead.
  • Retinoids and vitamin C — If your skin finds the combination too ambitious, separate them: vitamin C in the morning, retinoid at night.
  • Vitamin C and AHAs/BHAs/PHAs — Not inherently incompatible, but layering can sometimes be irritating for sensitive skin. Let vitamin C have the morning shift and save exfoliating acids for select evenings.
  • AHAs, BHAs and PHAs — Layering all three can increase your exfoliating load and leave skin feeling dry or irritated. Consider alternating them, or choosing a formula designed with more than one.

The big picture

Perhaps the most important pairing to avoid is everything + everything. More actives don't automatically mean better skin, and a considered routine gets you further than an overcrowded one.

Introduce new actives gradually, pay attention to how your skin responds, and always follow the directions of the individual formula.

Do I really need so many steps?

A great routine doesn't need a lengthy lineup. At its simplest:

  • AM: cleanse > moisturise > SPF
  • PM: cleanse > treatment/serum > moisturise

Toners, essences, oils, masks and extra serums can be introduced according to your skin's needs, your goals, and how much time you want to spend at the bathroom sink. The best routine isn't the one with the most steps; it's the one that works for you.

Multitasking products to streamline your routine

Mara Beauty's Pearl Peptide Glaze Facial Essence combines a toner, essence and serum in one, while Living Libations' Best Skin Ever Seabuckthorn can cleanse and moisturise. Ursa Major's Mountain Glow Golden Serum is a true 'one and done' formula. La Fervance's Eclat Extraordinaire is an equally versatile multi-ritual balm, also working as a morning skin primer, mask or subtle highlighter.

A considered routine doesn't have to mean more products — sometimes it's simply choosing formulas that play more than one role.
